Business Leaders Support the Full-Funding of Promised Scholarships
SALT LAKE CITY- (August 18, 2009) Business leaders support the full-funding of the New Century and Regent scholarships this year. The Chamber is encouraged that Governor Herbert and the State Legislature are working to honor that commitment.
Business leaders believe fostering a highly educated workforce is the most critical long-term strategy for a vibrant economy and healthy society. Students who have earned these scholarships are admirable examples of ambition and dedication and will be among the most in-demand workers.
Programs such as the New Century and Regent scholarships serve as incentives and important tools for encouraging higher education and expediting graduation. We applaud the accomplishments of Utah educators, families and students for achieving positive outcomes with relatively limited funding.
The business community recognizes that changing economic conditions may require re-evaluation of the programs in the future. Commitments made to the students who worked diligently to earn the scholarships should be honored.
